Smithville
Smithville, Missouri is a town with both history and heart. The community is one of the oldest settled areas of Clay County. Historians say that Smithville was named after a family who moved to the area in 1824. As the story goes, Humphrey Smith and his wife Nancy brought their seven children to Missouri and built a mill at the place now known as Smith’s Falls.

Development of a small town around Main Street soon followed. The downtown area that cropped up back then hasn’t changed much over the years; newcomers to Smithville are generally impressed with the city’s historic flair. Residents and visitors can stroll and explore independent shops and restaurants situated in scenic, century-old buildings.

The heart of Smithville is apparent in its residents and local business owners -- the folks who are taking action to preserve the charm and historic values of the community. The Smithville Heritage District Merchants Association (SHDMA) sponsors community events through much of the year, giving residents several opportunities to gather and celebrate their local culture. The SHDMA is also involved in managing the growth and rising popularity of Smithville, while preserving the quaint atmosphere and historic architecture.

Smithville Lake provides residents with access to an all-purpose recreational venue. Activities available include boating, swimming, water skiing, camping, hiking, horseback riding, golfing, trapshooting and hunting. There are two marinas offering boat rentals and related services. Additionally, Clay County Parks rents out slips and provides a launch for sailboats. Swimmers will head to the lake’s two main beaches, which have both shower and changing facilities. Campers have their choice of several hundred campsites for rent.

Paradise Pointe Complex will be the destination for golfers; the public complex has two 18-hole courses and a clubhouse. The city of Smithville operates Smith’s Fork Park, which has a variety of courts and fields for sports, plus additional facilities for camping, picnicking and archery. The park can be found just below Smithville Lake Dam.
